La Cafetiere 3-Cup Replacement Beaker Review

I was a long time, very satisfied user of the La Cafetiere coffee press before accidentally breaking the beaker - perhaps, too long a user. My press must be an earlier model - all stainless steel except the beaker. I have not seen this "Retro" style illustrated in any new La Cafetiere products.

The replacement beaker arrived quickly with no problems, but because of the fit and shipping costs, I wished I would have bought a whole new press instead of the replacement beaker.

The Fit: The replacement is slightly wider at the base and slightly taller, overall. This creates three major problems. 1) Because of the added width, once inserted in the original holder, it is jammed and can not be removed without breaking. The replacement beaker does not go all the way down to the base of the holder - it "floats" about .25 inch above the bottom. Because of this and the fact that the jammed beaker can not be removed, it is very difficult to clean. 2) Because of the added height of the replacement beaker, the plunger/screen no longer goes all the way to the bottom of the beaker - it rides about .5 inches above the base and thus produces an inferior brew of coffee. And major problem number 3) because it is stuck in my original base, it can not be returned. I have no choice but to throw it all away, along with my money spent on the replacement and exorbitant shipping costs.

Live and Learn. Makes you miss the "Brick and Mortar" Stores where you could examine, hold, and evaluate items before purchasing.

Melitta Hazelnut Crème Decaf Coffee Pods, 18 Count (Pack of 4) Review

I'm very pleased with the decaf hazelnut. Smooth with a nice amount of hazelnut - not so much that it is overwhelming, but not so light that you can't appreciate the flavor. Hits the perfect middle spot.

It works fine in a Senseo if you use the two pod holder. It's a bit too thick for the one pod - tried it, but I was worried that I'd break the hinge since you have to use a lot of force to close the machine. Switched to the two pod holder and it worked fine. Nice amount of foam on the top as well.

I brew using one pod and the two cup setting since I prefer flavored coffee to be on the lighter side. You'll want to use the one cup setting if you prefer stronger coffee.

(As an aside to those who like to make their own pods or use the My k-cup attachment: the ground decaf Melitta works very well for both applications. Just the right level of fineness to get a good, strong cup of coffee.)

My only quibble is that the pods are individually wrapped. Yes, I'm sure that helps keep them fresher longer, but I hate to see all that wasteful packaging. One of the things I like about the Senseo pods is that they are fully compostable. It bugs me to have to toss all that wrapping, plus it requires a larger box, which again wastes packaging. The regular Senseo pods are not individually wrapped, and I've never had a problem with them going stale (I put them into an air-tight canister when I open up the pack).

But, packaging aside, this is a great choice if you like hazelnut decaf. Highly recommend.

After a trip to Miami a few years ago I got hooked on Cafe Bustello. Hands down, the regular Cafe Bustello in the yellow package Cafe Bustelo Coffee Espresso, 10-Ounce Bricks (Pack of 4)is the best Cuban-style coffee available commercially at ANY price, and it just happens to be a great value too! I was so excited to learn that there was new Bustello Supreme, and quickly ordered it on Amazon. There are 3 regular coffee drinkers in my home that all love regular Bustello, and all three (including me) were hugely disappointed in the Supreme. Not only is it not worth EXTRA money, it isn't even as good as the regular Bustello. I'm not sure what Bustello was thinking when they created Supreme, but clearly this is a case where they should have left alone a good thing. Do yourself a favor and buy the traditional Bustello in the yellow package and stay away from the Supreme.
